Bowling is a recreational "hangout" for many people. They love bowling because it is enjoyable and fun.

You can go to the bowling alley to relieve stress from a long hard week of work. Bowling is a good time for bonding and relaxing with friend and family.

It is the perfect recreation for families because, at the bowling center, they can spend quality time together. Modernized venues provide their players everything that they need if they want to spend the entire day playing bowling.

There are always snacks and other amenities available inside the bowling alley. Some venues also have specific areas designated for those people who wish to smoke.

Aside from the complete facilities and service they provide, they also charge an affordable price for each game.

Many alleys also "rent by the hour" for groups or families who want to have more time available for playing. Durable plastic seats and benches will give a person a comfortable seat while waiting for your turn to bowl.

Many bowling alleys now also provide computer scoring for a much easier and convenient tabulation of the scores. It is an easy task for the scorer to list every strike or spare. You will be aware of your score because of the rapid calculation of the computer. Computer scoring eliminates the paper work!

When going out with friends, you may select either the ten-pin or five-pin bowling game. The five-pin game can be more fun because there is no special technique required to roll the ball down the lane to knock down the pins.

Ten-pin bowling is popular, especially among teens, because it is very exciting and fun to play. It gives a person three attempts in case there are pins left standing after the first shot. Ten pins are set in the target area in a triangular shape. There is a good chance to score a strike, or to at least leave fewer pins standing in the target area, if the shot hits the center pin with a good spin on ball.

Everyone loves to bowl because it can be adapted to anyone's lifestyle. It is recognized as one of the most popular indoor sports of all time. It does not matter whether you are a good player or not, what is important is for you to have fun.

Basics and Bowling Tips

Let's start simple, shall we!

  1. Find a bowling ball that you like and fits your fingers
  2. Take the ball and throw it down the lane hitting the pins

THAT'S EASY! You can do that! :) The object of the game is to knock down as many bowling pins as possible.

Now, lets go over some some basic concepts of the game, and strategies involved.

On both sides of the lane there is a depression or trench known as the gutter, it starts where the lane begins and goes all the way were it ends.

If the ball goes into the gutter, you get zero points, really hurting a decent score especially a spare from the previous frame. So try your best to keep the ball on the wood bowline lane and out of the gutter. Oh, and try to keep your mind out of there too.:)

Hitting the pins is the next essential step to bowling, and if you've done that then you are already better than me! You get two chances to bowl each frame so make good use of them. Also each turn is called a frame and if you hit all ten pins on your first chance you get what's known as a strike.

Bowling a strike will get you alot of "high fives" and it will double your point's on your next turn. The way the strike is scored is, you get 10 points for the strike plus your next two balls, so if you bowl a strike, followed by a five then a one your score would be 10+5+1 for the frame with the strike and 5+1 for the frame you just bowled. So you have a combined score of 22, a little bit confusing but you'll get the hang of it, plus that's why we have electronic scoreboards.

If it takes two turns to knock down ten pins, for example, you knock over 2 pins with your first ball then 8 with your next, that means you got all 10 so it's called a spare. It's not as good as a strike but it will defiantly add to your score. The spare counts as 10 points plus the next ball you throw, so if you bowl a spare then in the next frame knock down 8 pins, then your frame with the spare counts as 18.

Also on the last frame if you get a strike or spare then you have the opportunity to bowl again. As long as you knock down all of the pins within the first two balls then you can go again, so you actually have the chance to bowl three strikes if you're good, or lucky.

I'm not the greatest bowler by any means, but understanding the basics of the game will help you to improve you score and more importantly, you look good , even if you throw a gutter ball.

Bowling History

Bowling balls are tossed energetically down the alley to knock ten bowling pins down. This by far has becomes one of the most sought after stress relieving games in the world. It's main objective is to get something really hard and heavy and throw it to knock down all of the pins.

There are more than 120 countries who belong to the International Bowling Federation. The IBF claims there are about over 200 million people who enjoy bowling.

The largest bowling alley in the world contains more than a hundred bowling lanes. The average commercial bowling centers contain only about twenty five to thirty lanes. There are around 12,000 bowling centers in the whole world.

Bowling consist of four parts:

  1. the lane,
  2. the approach
  3. the pit
  4. and the pin deck

The approach is where players take several strides to get the maximum adrenaline they need to release the ball and knock down the pins. There is a control line (foul line) which marks the place where players must let go of the ball. The player must not cross the line before or after the ball has been thrown.

Since bowling history is colorful and full of twists and turns, researchers have discovered that the game is actually the very first sport that was discovered.

Back in 5200 B.C. they found primitive balls and pins in Egyptian tombs. They also found Polynesian cultures that practiced the same sport and found lanes about 6 feet long. However, the development of the game, which started in the third century A.D., is credited to the religious leaders of Germany. A kegel - which represents the devil - was used as a pin. It needed to be hit as a sign of purity and freeing from sin and anyone who failed to hit the target was determined to be wicked.

It was a practice that led the congregation to salvation and was even more standardized by Martin Luther. But when bowling was banned and used for illegal transactions, 10 pin bowling was invented to bypass the law.

The American Bowling Congress started in 1895. Now there are about 55 million players in the US and bowling has become the American game, played to unite and promote equality among fellow men.
